Distinctive Unit Insignia


Description/Blazon
A Gold color metal and enamel device 1 1/8 inches (2.86 cm) in height overall consisting of a shield blazoned:  Per fess arched rayonn Azure and Or, in base an eagle in stoop in Brown tones, in dexter chief a mullet Or.  Attached below the shield a scroll Azure inscribed "FLYING TO THE FUTURE" in Gold.

Symbolism
Ultramarine blue is the primary color used by Army Aviation.  The blue and yellow also appear on the Alaska state flag.  The rayonn division alludes to the aurora borealis.  The star represents the North Star, and the eagle, is symbolic of strength, vigilance and aerial capabilities.

Background
The distinctive unit insignia was approved effective 1 June 1988.

That for the regiments and separate battalions of the Alaska Army National Guard:  On a wreath of the colors Or and Azure, the aurora borealis blended from dexter base Purpure through Red, Orange, Yellow to Green to chief and repeated inversely to sinister base behind a totem pole of three figures, an eagle, a bear and a walrus paleways affront all Proper.
